Based on Gu Byeong-mo’s novel 'Gill,' the film was screened three times at
BIAF2024 on the 26th, 27th, and 29th at Bucheon CGV.
Although the film's setting was adapted to France, the narrative, including its
dialogues, remains faithful to the original novel, evoking a lyrical atmosphere.
A notable technical achievement of the film is its seamless integration of
live-action performances with 3D animation.
The characters exhibit fluid movements that make it difficult to distinguish
between 2D and 3D animation.
This film is not recommended for those expecting commercial, child-friendly
animations with 'good-triumphs-over-evil' themes or happy endings.
It is an adult-oriented animation designed for viewers who can fully embrace
its heavy atmosphere, driven by the protagonists' conflicts and dark-toned
visuals. The film invites the audience to see themselves in its characters and find solace.
Meanwhile, 'Gill,' which was nominated at the Annecy International Animation
Festival, often called the 'Cannes of Animation,' did not win an award but showcased
the emotional depth of Korean animation.
The film’s next stop, the Tokyo International Film Festival, runs from October 28 to
November 6, with 'Gill' scheduled for its third and final screening, followed by an
interview/Q&A session with Director Ahn on November 3.
